CORNWALL BURNING PERMIT PROCEDURE

 

1.   Fill out application and return to Selectman’s office at 24 Pine Street, or by mail to PO

box 97, Cornwall, CT 06753 or by FAX to (860) 672-4068). Include your fax number for copy to be faxed to you “Applicant’s name" is the name of the property owner on whose property the pile is being burned. “Company name” is the name of the Company or worker who is in charge of the burn pile and is doing the burn. ”Specific address of the proposed burn” requires the 911 house number and street name where the pile is being burned for dispatch purposes. If the burn is in an open  field, list the 911 house number nearest.

2.   A copy will be returned to you. It is for your records. By State Statute this copy should be in your possession at the burn site at the time of the burn.

3.   When you are ready to burn call the Fire Marshall, Stan MacMillan, at 364-0909 after 8:00 a.m.   The burn index will not be updated before 8:00 a.m. You may call on Saturdays and Sundays.

 

WHEN YOU ARE READY TO BURN YOU MUST CALL FIRST, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE A PERMIT ON FILE IN THE OFFICE. CONDITIONS FOR BURNING MAY CHANGE DAILY.

 

Your permit is good for 30 days and will be added to a list filed with the fire department. If you have not burned within that time period and still plan on burning, call the Selectman’s Office at 672-4959 for an extension to maintain your permit on file with the fire department. 

 

NOTE:

·      Do not start a fire by burning tires

·      Only brush less than 3 inches in diameter is to be burned. No logs! No leaf piles!

·      Do not burn demolition materials.

·      Burn piles must be out by dark by means of water or a dirt cover.

·      Permit holders must be present at all times while the fire is burning.

·      Water must be available nearby.

·      It is the responsibility of the permit holder to make sure the fire is burnt in a safe way. Please be careful.

·      Please follow these rules. Not doing so may jeopardize your right to obtain burning permits.
